A.C.T.I.O.N. Coalition
A.C.T.I.O.N. (Active Coalition That Influences
Outcomes in this Neighborhood), founded
by and is an extension of C.L.A.S.S.
(Changing Lives and Staying Sober), is a
coalition made up of 12 influential
community sectors that have joined
together for the common purpose of
addressing the rampant, systemic and
generational use of underage drinking,
drug and tobacco use and its impact upon
the youth in the 48219 zip code area.
A.C.T.I.O.N. Coalition’s Mission is to plan
and implement environmental strategies
to prevent and reduce youth substance
use and its associated consequences.
Statistics show that children and youth are
exposed to alcohol, tobacco, marijuana and
other drugs now more than ever before.
In one study, high school students report
that it’s easiest to obtain alcohol than the
other substance.
Many youth began experimenting with using alcohol, drugs and/or tobacco as early as or before the age of 13. There are many factors that contribute to alcohol, drug and the use of tobacco. They include: easy accessibility (prescription drugs which includes medicinal marijuana), peer pressure, abuse, and depression; problems in the home (i.e. children of divorced parents), poor grades, and mental health challenges.
Some major public health issues caused by underage use of alcohol include: drinking and driving, suicide, sexual assault, physical fights, injuries under the influence as well as the effects it has upon non-drinkers. Every facet of our community is impacted by the consequences of our youth using alcohol, drugs and tobacco impacts every part of our community.
A.C.T.I.O.N. meets the 4th Thursday of each month at 1:00 p.m. We come together to: develop action plans, devise ways to implement our plans within the community, report our successes, brainstorm ways to improve, evaluate and celebrate our success as well support every sector represented in their efforts to make our community as free as possible.
Partnership
There is an ancient, but still applicable, African proverb, “It takes a village to raise a child”. We would like to add, “It takes a village to save a child.” By partnering with our community’s parents and others to support and help reduce risky behaviors, we can influence our youth to choose safer alternatives. C.L.A.S.S.- A.C.T.I.O.N. is a movement, a group of concerned people working together to help protect our at-risk youth from underage drinking, drugs and tobacco use.
Therefore, the following sector representatives have partnered with us to make this coalition successful. They include: Law Enforcement, Business, Schools, Church/Religious, State, Local (Government), Healthcare, Youth, Youth Organization, Parents, Media, Community Organizations, etc.)
WHERE: 17405 Lahser Street, 2nd Floor, Detroit, MI 48219
